In a recent development, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has revised its policy regarding advances for medical treatment. Under Paragraph 68J of the Employees Provident Fund Scheme, EPF contributors can now apply for a partial withdrawal for medical expenses, both for themselves and their dependents, with the limit increased to Rs 1 lakh from the previous Rs 50,000.
The EPFO announced, "The competent authority has approved the limit of auto claim settlements under para 68J from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 and the same has also been deployed in the application software on 10/April/2024. This is for information and further necessary action of all."
EPF members can seek an advance for medical treatment under specific conditions outlined in Paragraph 68J, including hospitalization for one month or more, major surgeries, and specific ailments such as tuberculosis, leprosy, paralysis, cancer, mental disorders, or heart ailments.
Additionally, physically impaired members can apply for advance payments under Paragraph 68-N to procure necessary equipment. However, such withdrawals necessitate submitting a medical certificate from a licensed physician or an official designated by the EPFO.
The EPFO has streamlined the claim submission process with the introduction of the Universal Account Number (UAN) system. Subscribers who have linked their UAN with their Aadhaar number and bank account can directly submit claim forms to the EPFO, eliminating the need for employer attestation and simplifying the process.
